University and Tertiary Sport New Zealand

Competitive inter-university sport first took place in New Zealand in 1902. The New Zealand University Sports’ Union was created in 1957 and is now known as University and Tertiary Sport New Zealand.

UTSNZ is brand new, established by the universities in late 2015 and currently in the process of appointing its first Executive Director. It will be running a series of inter-institutional sports events in 2016, starting with 3x3 basketball on March 18 and having events for through 7s rugby, futsal, badminton/table tennis, hockey, volleyball/basketball before finishing with netball in September. Three of the sports have identified international pathways for teams selected out of the event, and most will have intra-institutional competitions to enable the institutions to select their best-available team. Contact your sports management team on campus if you want to be involved.

UTSNZ is also responsible for facilitating New Zealand students competing in international competitions, both the single-sport World University Championships and the multi-sport World University Games that for many sports are rated higher than the Commonwealth Games in terms of participants and quality.

It also has a role in working with other sports bodies, such as the National Sports Organisations, Regional Sports Bodies, Sports New Zealand and the New Zealand Olympic Committee, advocating on behalf of tertiary sports and tertiary students.

UTSNZ also owns and has the sole right to award New Zealand Sporting Blues.
