Come and watch the first reading of the Bill to change the composition of university and wānanga councils
The Minister of Tertiary Education is introducing a Bill to Parliament which will both increase the number of ministerial-appointed members and remove guaranteed student and staff representation to councils.
Removing the representative student and staff positions to make universities and wānanga more business like is an attack on the democracy and academic freedom.
The proposal will make New Zealand’s university’s governing bodies amongst the smallest in the world, and would be dangerously dominated by government appointees.
Analysis of current Council membership shows that making Council membership ‘more flexible’, and giving more power to the Minister, will lead to Councils that are dangerously unrepresentative of the communities that they are meant to serve.
